Phonetic spelling for better readers

Teaching phonetic spelling can help children become better readers, because it helps them understand the relationship between letters and sounds.  When children can decode words by sounding them out, they can read more fluently and with greater accuracy.

Phonetic spelling involves teaching children how to break down words into their sounds, or phonemes, and then map those sounds to specific letters or letter combinations.  For example, the word “cat” has three phonemes, /k/ /a/ /t/, which correspond to the letters “c,” “a,” and “t,” the same as ”city” /s/i/t/y/ respectively.

Kids@Spelling uses colour tiles for phonetic spelling.  It is a useful tool for visual learners or individuals who struggle with traditional spelling methods.

When children learn to spell words phonetically, they become more aware of the sounds within words, which can help them recognize and decode unfamiliar words when reading.  Additionally, phonetic spelling helps children develop their phonemic awareness, which is recognising and manipulating individual sounds within words.
